History
The London Stock Exchange changed notably during the nineteenth century. It began the century as mainly a market for British government debt but expanded to become the leading exchange of the global capital market. By the late 1830s, it was the world’s biggest and most significant stock exchange. Transactions were conducted in person on the exchange floor, though larger clients were generally favoured. Less affluent clients often traded via the growing number of brokers who operated outside of the main exchange.
