History
Our Palmer is based on the American artificial limb maker B. Frank Palmer, who was himself an amputee. His Patent Leg was one of the most successful prosthetic legs of the nineteenth century—in the US and internationally. You can learn more about Palmer and his Patent Leg in Caroline Leiffer’s contribution to Nineteenth-Century Disability: Cultures & Contexts. Also see chapter 1 of Ryan Sweet’s free 2022 book Prosthetic Body Parts in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture.
